Art History for Transfer

California Community Colleges offer associate degrees for transfer to the CSU. These may include Associate in Arts (AA-T) or Associate in Science (AS-T) degrees. These degrees are designed to provide a clear pathway to a CSU major and baccalaureate degree. California Community College students who are awarded an AA-T or AS-T degree are guaranteed admission with junior standing somewhere in the CSU system and given priority admission consideration to their local CSU campus or to a program that is deemed similar to their community college major. This priority does not guarantee admission to specific majors or campuses.

Students who have been awarded an AA-T or AS-T are able to complete their remaining requirements for the 120-unit baccalaureate degree within 60 semester or 90 quarter units. Students are encouraged to meet with a MVC counselor to review their options for transfer and to develop an educational plan that best meets their goals and needs.

This program can be completed in 2 years, or 4 semesters (fall/spring). Students can decrease their semester course load by taking some required classes during the winter and summer terms instead.

Program completion within this time frame is dependent on the number of units enrolled per term and course availability. Full-time students are recommended to take 12-15 units per term. Meet with a counselor to develop your Student Educational Plan (SEP) to determine the appropriate general education pattern and work/life/school balance.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

• Identify, describe, analyze, and discuss the stylistic characteristics of a wide variety of countries, regions, and periods of European and non-European artworks.
• Formulate and synthesize observations and evaluations regarding the historical, social, and political context in which various forms of art were created in both written and oral form.
• Apply various methodologies for interpreting a range of art forms to evaluate and analyze the ideas and philosophies expressed and explored within the art works.
• Critique, compare, and contrast various key artists, artworks and styles across a wide span of time using appropriate art terminology.
• Recognize distinct iconography from a mixture of different geographical areas and relate these manifestations to local, social, cosmological, and political institutions
