About Working at MVC

The Student Employment Program helps students earn money to pay for educational expenses by working part time (up to 20 hours per week) while learning transferable job skills. Benefits include:

  • Flexible work schedule that works around classes
  • Build up resume experience and enhance marketability
  • Earn money while gaining work experience

Students can apply to work at a variety of jobs on campus pending their eligibility for the Student Employment Program. Students may be eligible for one or all of the programs available which include Federal Work Study (FWS), Department-Funded/Special Projects, and CalWORKs Work Study.

Types of employment

How your position is funded determines how many hours you can work, the requirements you must fulfill in order to receive pay, and for how long you can stay employed as a student.

You must work at the college listed on your admissions application for all positions. Students are limited to 16 semesters or 4 years of employment (with the exception of CalWORKs Work Study).

Federal Work Study (FWS)

The US Department of Education awards the school a certain amount of funding each year to allow students to supplement their education costs. Students eligible for Federal Work Study may be awarded up to $4,000.00 per fiscal year. To be eligible for FWS students are required to:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which can be completed online at, School code for Financial Aid: 041735
  • Complete their financial aid file and determined eligible
  • Mark “Moreno Valley” as their home campus
  • Maintain at least 6 units (Fall and Spring) and 3 units (Winter or Summer)
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 CGPA
  • Meet the Student Financial Services Satisfactory Academic Progress standard
  • Have a valid Social Security card and picture ID

For Federal Work Study positions, use MVC's FAFSA school code, 041735, on your FAFSA application.


Earnings for District positions are paid from a department’s budget and do not require the completion of the FAFSA. To be eligible to work for District funded positions, students are required to:

  • Enroll in at least 6 units (fall and spring) and 3 units (winter or summer)
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 CGPA
  • Have a valid Social Security card and picture ID
  • Mark “Moreno Valley” as their home campus

CalWORKs Work Study

The CalWORK’s Work Study program connects eligible students to part-time jobs on and off-campus. To be eligible to work for CalWork’s Study, students are required to:

  • Be enrolled in at least one unit
  • Provide a valid WTW contract to the MVC Workforce at the start of every semester
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 CGPA
  • Have a valid Social Security card and picture ID
  • Get clearance from the CalWorks/Workforce Preparation department to help determine eligibility
  • Mark “Moreno Valley” as their home campus.

How to become a student employee

Student Employment
  1. Prepare and find an opening
    • Prepare your resume and review the job application. Be sure you can answer all the questions.
    • If you meet requirements, review our "How to Apply" instructions.pdf
    • Departments that are hiring will be post jobs on the RCCD jobs board under Student Positions. If there is a specific department you would like to work for but do not see listed online, you may inquire with the department to see if they are hiring.
  2. Apply
    • Complete the online application for your desired position(s). If Moreno Valley is your home college, you may only apply for positions marked MVC or DISTRICT. You can apply for as many positions as you like or are qualified for.
    • Once your application is submitted, the hiring department/site will screen applicants. Follow up with your application status by signing into the RCCD job board. To follow up in-person, you may contact the department/site or hiring supervisor.
  3. Interview and tentative agreement
    • If you are selected to be interviewed, the department supervisor will contact you. If the department offers you the position, you will fill out a hire packet with the hiring department and/or Supervisor. You can review the checklists here to see what information will be requested at the time of the interview. (Hint: come prepared to your interview to expedite the hiring process):
    • The supervisor submits your hire packet for review and approval to the Student Employment office (this process can take 7-10 days if there are no errors and the packet is complete).
  4. Formal offer of employment
    • If approved for hire, you and the department Supervisor will receive a written approval from Student Employment and the hiring supervisor will contact you with a start date.

Affordable Care Act (ACA) Forms and Information

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is intended to extend healthcare coverage to those who are uninsured and defines a mechanism for fees, taxes and penalties to help finance the cost associated with providing healthcare to all citizens. Effective January 1, 2014, residents of the USA must maintain Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) or face tax penalties. Learn about how this affects your income and employment.

COVID-19 Sick Leave and Employee Leave Rights

Student employees are entitled to up to 80 hours of COVID-19 related sick leave through September 30, 2021. Students may submit an oral or written request for this leave. You may take leave if you are unable to work due to caring for yourself (quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19), caring for a family member, or if you are attending or recovering from a COVID-19 vaccine appointment.

New Hire and Rehire Forms
