Lopez Appointed to Statewide Task Force

Carlos Lopez, vice president of Academic Affairs, has been appointed by the statewide organization of Chief Instructional Officers to serve on the Vision for Success Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. In the Task Force’s 2020 report to Governor Gavin Newsome, it outlined recommendations in order to increase faculty and staff diversity in the California Community Colleges system. In 2019, the original 16-member Task Force was directed to identify ways to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of the California community college workforce. To address the need of a diverse workforce within the system, the Chancellor’s Office is requesting a state investment in the 2020-21 budget. The Diversity Task Force proposed augmenting existing funding and two new funding gaps that will advance statewide diversity efforts. The requested investments total $76.4 million.

“I am excited to participate on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Steering Committee,” Lopez said.

He added, the work of the committee is focused on advancing Chancellor Oakley’s call to action to take steps against structural racism. To this end, the committee is working on:

  • Identifying data and analyses needed to create a more representative workforce within the California Community College System;
  • Recommend policy changes for the diversification of search committees;
  • Develop additional outreach and extend recruitment opportunities to underrepresented academic communities;
  • Dialogue with system partners like the Academic Senate, Chief Human Resources Officers, and unions to include a diversity component in faculty evaluations;
  • Recommend policies for authentic exit interviews and analysis of this exit data to inform strategies for improving retention; and
  • Develop a year-long academy for deans of color to promote Chief Instructional Officer Promotion.

Lopez is heading up the data workgroup along with three other chief instructional officers from across California.
