MVC Earns 2021-22 Military Friendly Designation in Two Categories

Moreno Valley College has received two Silver awards in the just released 2021-22 Military Friendly Schools listing. The College received recognition as an overall institution for Veterans and as an institution friendly for military wives.

"Moreno Valley not only serves Veterans with dignity, respect and honor, but provides support services on campus and acts as a bridge to external support services for spouses and dependents of Veterans," Lizette Tenorio, Veterans Services specialist, said. "At the Veterans Resource Center, we strive to provide dependents and spouses with the same level of service as that of our Veterans with workshops, orientation and graduation event participation. We understand they are part of our military family and are inclusive with the services provided. Building relationships and connections with these students at the VRC has been rewarding because we learn their individual stories and that of their spouse.

This is the third time that the College's Veterans Resource Center has been cited for recognition. In 2019, the College earned a designation as Best for Vets. Over 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-22 survey with 747 earning some type of designation. The 2021-22 Military Friendly Schools list is published in this month's issue of GI Jobs magazine. Methodology, criteria and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly. School designation was evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.

To be designated as a college for spouses, Military Friendly Schools used data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations to create a comprehensive guide for military spouses looking to further education.

"The College is honored to receive an additional designation as a Military Friendly Spouse School for our efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for military spouses," Andrew Sanchez, Ed.D., dean, Enrollment Services & Engagement, said.

MVC was one of 49 institutions in California to be selected for either a gold, silver or bronze award in the overall Military Friendly Schools listing. There were 12 community colleges selected.

"MVC is located in a county where there are over 125,876 Veterans residing; 9,993 Veterans live in the cities of Moreno Valley and Perris which the College serves directly," Sanchez said. "This award is important to us at the College, its students and their families because we hope that the Military Friendly designation will draw more Veterans and their dependents to enroll at Moreno Valley College in Public Safety programs such as fire and police academies, paramedic/EMT, and/or short-term certificate and degree programs."

To earn the Gold Award, an institution must be within 10 percent of the 10th-ranked institution. Colleges receiving a Silver Award were within 20 percent of the 10th-ranked organization in the Gold division. Criteria for consideration can be found here.

Final ratings were determined by combining the institution's survey response set and government/agency public data sources within a logic based scoring assessment. Included are the institution's ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement and persistence as far as degree advancement or transfer for all students and, specifically, for Veterans.

"Military Friendly is committed to transparency and providing consistent data driven standards in our designation process," said Kayla Lopez, national director of Military Partnerships, Military Friendly. "This creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to consistently evolve and invest in their programs. Schools who achieve designation show true commitment and dedication in their efforts. Our standards assist schools by providing a benchmark that promotes positive educational outcomes, resources and support services that better the educational landscape and provide opportunity for the military community."

Military Friendly Schools' list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide; input from student Veterans; and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly Schools survey from participating institutions. The survey questions, methodology, criteria and weighting were developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. The survey is administered for free and is open to postsecondary schools that wish to participate.
