Education Leaders Distribute Chromebooks to Students

Moreno Valley College and Val Verde Unified School District officials began distributing free Chromebooks to MVC students today. Over the course of three days, the College expects to hand deliver 1,000 laptops to students.

VVUSD donated the used Chromebooks.

"We've had a long-standing partnership with Moreno Valley College inspired by our shared commitment to students," Michael R McCormick, superintendent, Val Verde Unified School District, said. "Providing surplus laptops to Moreno Valley College students is an opportunity to support scholars in the community we serve."

VVUSD's intent was to get computers into the hands of students with the most financial need. The first 1,000 eligible students who registered would receive a laptop. College officials estimated that over 1,700 students were eligible to receive a Chromebook. Eligible students were identified by Student Financial Services. There are currently 1,794 Pell recipients and 84 California Dream Act recipients enrolled who College leaders said would benefit from the free-of-charge computers.

"This donation by Val Verde Unified School District is an invaluable source of support to MVC students in need of computer technology and will help to provide students with access to online virtual classes and student support," Andrew Sanchez, Ed.D., dean, Grants & Equity Initiatives, said. "These computers are being provided to students who face technology challenges and these students will now have upgraded or additional technology that will allow for better online learning from home. This support from the Val Verde Unified School is important to our students who are facing challenges both on and off-campus. We are thankful to Val Verde Unified School District for this gift which allows us to enhance much needed technology support to our students."

Distribution of laptops will continue on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm. Unclaimed laptops will be released to students on a waitlist at a later date.

"The relationship and partnership between Moreno Valley College and Val Verde USD has always been strong and special," Julio C. Gonzalez, director, Educational Partnerships, said. "We both work to provide the best education to our students and community. The donation of the 1000 Chromebooks from Val Verde USD to Moreno Valley College is a great example of our partnership and demonstrates their support to our community and our college. These Chromebooks will provide our college students access to a device that will help them continue their education at Moreno Valley College."
