A2MEND Recognizes Excellence in Leadership and Student Advocacy

The African American Male Education Network and Development (A2MEND) organization recently honored local excellence in mentorship and student achievement at its 19th Annual Summit in Long Beach. The event, themed "Sacred Work: (Re)membering, (Re)storing, (Re)birthing Black Men and Boys," culminated in dual top honors for institutional leadership and a combined $18,990 in scholarships for eight dedicated students.
Gertrude (Gertia) Lopez, associate professor and Umoja community counselor and coordinator, received the A2MEND Charter of the Year Award on behalf of Moreno Valley College (MVC), alongside the individual A2MEND Advisor of the Year Award. These distinctions recognize a sustained commitment to the success and holistic development of men of color. The awards highlight the efficacy of culturally responsive practices, mentorship, and the intentional relationship-building necessary to foster student leadership within higher education.
The summit brought together educators and students from across the state to explore innovative strategies to increase the success of Black male students in the California Community Colleges system. The organization also celebrated a cohort of outstanding scholars for their academic perseverance and community contributions. The scholarship recipients were selected for their volunteer service, promotion of brotherhood, and active participation in Saturday enrichment events and leadership activities.
