Local Training Program for Mobile Intensive Care Nurses Strengthens Riverside County’s Emergency Response System

A new chapter in emergency medical training began this fall as the inaugural EMS 95 class concluded at Moreno Valley College’s Ben Clark Training Center, establishing the first local pathway for Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) training in Riverside County.
Developed in partnership with Riverside County EMS and local paramedic-based hospitals, the course brings specialized instruction closer to home for registered nurses serving as base hospital partners. These highly skilled nurses play a pivotal role in pre-hospital care, providing medical guidance to paramedics in the field and ensuring seamless coordination during emergency response.
“Successfully launching the EMS 95 class is a major milestone for our EMS program and for patient care across Riverside County,” said Bob Fontaine, paramedic program director at Ben Clark Training Center. “By training our MICNs locally, we are strengthening the backbone of our emergency response system and fostering a true interprofessional educational experience.”
The program’s design emphasizes collaboration, pairing MICN students with paramedic cadets to enhance communication, teamwork, and situational readiness. With EMS 95 now offered twice annually, the course will ensure a steady pipeline of nurses trained to meet the evolving demands of emergency medical services and the community members who depend on them.
