Cesar Chavez Scholarship Event

Annual César E. Chávez
Arts Scholarship Competition


The César E. Chávez Scholarship Committee invites participants to enter the 2019 César E. Chávez Arts Scholarship Competition. This year's submissions will be featured at the César E. Chávez Scholarship Breakfast on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 am.

All entries must address this year's theme: A Legacy of Inspiration: "We are ready to give up everything everything—even our lives—in our struggles for justice" - César E. Chávez.

Entries that do not meet the theme or guidelines will not be eligible for consideration. The competition is only open to enrolled Moreno Valley College students.


Accepted Art and Media

  • Painting (no larger than 36x36 inches)
  • Drawing (no larger than 36x36 inches)
  • Photography (no larger than 36x36 inches)
  • Poem/Spoken Word (no longer than 3-minutes oration)
  • Sculpture (no larger than 36x36x36 inches)
  • Video (no more than 3 minutes in length)

Work is not required to be framed. Unframed pieces will be accepted.



Submit original artwork by Thursday, March 14 by Noon. Participants must submit both original artwork and registration form by the deadline to be considered.

  • Email completed registration formpdf, photo/video releasepdf, 150- to 250- word autobiography and headshot photo to with the following subject line: Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship Competition.
  • Deliver original artwork in-person to Student Services Building, Room 212. Location inquiries can be made at the Admissions & Records desk (see college map).
  • Upload videos and poem/spoken word performances to a free media host site (such as YouTube) and submit web link to by deadline.


Important Information

  • Awards: Two $500 scholarship prizes will be awarded
  • Deadline: Thursday, March 14 by Noon
  • Where to Submit:
    • Submit registration forms and video/audio art to
    • Deliver original physical art to the Student Services Building, Room 212.


Additional Requirements

If selected, competition winners must attend the César E. Chávez Scholarship Breakfast on Friday, March 29 at 7:30 am at Moreno Valley College in the Student Academic Services Building, Room 121. Winners are welcome to bring up to two guests. Parking is free the morning of the event.
