Presidential Investiture, 2017
Opening the fall of 1991 with nearly 3,000 students, the Moreno Valley campus of Riverside Community College District had the most culturally diverse student population among the three campuses. The leadership, led by Cordell Briggs, Ph.D., provost, was interested in developing a linguistic and cultural identity and awareness. With a class of six students, Marvina Levy and Cheryl Honoré built the Gospel Choir, which is now known as the Moreno Valley College Gospel Singers. Levy's vision to expose students to all facets of gospel music continues under the direction of Gregory J. Thomas.
Renowned for their musical excellence, students have performed twice at the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. in Las Vegas, NV; performed internationally in Sendai, Japan, performing concerts at Miyagi Gakuin Women's College and Tohoku Fukushi University; traveled to Rome where they performed with 22 choirs in Europe and twice before Pope John Paul II. Additionally, the Gospel Singers have recorded two CDs with the Collegiate Gospel Choir Fellowship. In 1996, the Gospel Singers made their acting debut when they appeared on national television on America's Funniest Home Videos.

How to Join
The MVC Gospel Singers are a collaborative musical ensemble with a long history of musical excellence and diverse membership. We invite every student who loves to sing to participate. As part of the music program, Gospel ensemble members must enroll in one of two repeatable ensemble courses: Music 57 or 58. No audition is required to join.
Music 57 and 58 are one-unit, repeatable classes that are CSU and UC transferable. Both courses count as elective credit or, if students are pursuing a music degree or certificate, as ensemble credit. Gospel Singer courses focus on singing contemporary gospel music from artists such as Kirk Franklin, Tasha Cobb-Leonard, Hezekiah Walker, Tye Tribbett and Tamela Mann.
For more information about participation or enrollment in the Music 57 or 58 courses, contact the Gospel Singers program.
