Leadership Academy Program
Leadership development is an effort that enhances the learner's capacity to lead oneself, other individuals, groups, and organizations. This series will focus on leadership education and research addressing the leadership challenges of individuals and our institutions. Leadership involves the capacity to think and act beyond the boundaries that limit our effectiveness. Strong interpersonal skills, grounded in personal reflection and self-awareness are key to successful and effective leadership.
The core of RCCD's Leadership Academy Programs (LAP) will build the most critical skills for success at each leader-level through a comprehensive development series centered on leadership fundamentals and skill building. RCCD initially implemented two distinct academies: 1) Introduction to Leadership, Leadership Academy I (LA I) - focusing on the new manager or those staff and/or faculty interested in pursuing leadership positions and career pathways; and 2) Transition to Leadership, Leadership Academy II (LA II) - a specialized skill development program designed for current managers, department chairs, administrators/executives, or employees and students with some leadership experience and/or trainings looking to improve, excel, and enhance their leadership skills. Additional professional development series and training opportunities are being developed to support all District employees.
It is critical that leaders build the skills and confidence to build commitment and translate strategy into effective action. RCCD's Leadership Academy Programs are designed to better equip developing leaders to handle the tensions and ever-shifting dynamics of leading. Leadership is centrally concerned with people. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the institutions in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. These programs seek to build leaders that strive to excel in new ways; maximize personal leadership power to accelerate the District's and Colleges' commitment, alignment and results; and balance short term and long term strategic perspectives.
Leadership development is a continuous process. Riverside Community College District will develop strong leaders from within its institutions through providing pathways of success for staff, faculty, management, and administration/executives.
"Think of managing change as an adventure. It tests your skills and abilities. It brings forth talent that may have been dormant. Change is also a training ground for leadership. When we think of leaders, we remember times of change, innovation, and conflict. Leadership is often about shaping a new way of life. To do that, you must advance change, take risks and accept responsibility for making change happen." - Charles E. Rice, CEO of Barnett Bank.
